
Nyoman Nuarta
Nyoman Nuarta’s art works mostly reflect on important Balinese life philosophy. His professional career began when he was still a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). His name started to gain popularity after he won Indonesia’s Proclamator Monument competition in 1979 just before he graduated from ITB. Nyoman Nuarta has been participated in the Art Nouveau movement in Indonesia since 1977, along with fellow artists such as Hardi, Dede Eri Supria, Harsono and art critic Jim Supangkat.
Nyoman Nuarta is recognized as one of Indonesia’s ingenious and foremost modern sculptors by creating numerous masterpieces and building monumental statues such as “Arjuna Wijaya” in Jakarta and the 60 meters tall “Jalesveva Jayamahe” housed in the Naval Base Complex in Surabaya. In 2018, he completed his most ambitious project the “Garuda Wisnu Kencana” monument in Bali. It is not only the largest and third tallest monument in the world, but also a landmark of Bali. Besides, Nuarta was appointed to build the statue of Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president. His career as an artist has won him numerous awards and recognitions including the “Padma Award” that presented by the Government of India in 2018. He is indeed the gem and pride of Indonesia.
